Another human activity observed locally is farming in the hills. Small dry-stone walled fields are generally maintained where a permanent water supply is found and a variety of crops are produced, including, albeit on a small scale, tobacco of a reasonable quality. Salad plants or alfalfa (as livestock fodder) often predominate, but anything from bananas, pomegranates, oranges, apples, aubergines and maize may be being grown, with mango trees also cultivated.
Rarely are date palms missing, however, these providing not only succulent dates, but material for roofing and hedging or just welcome shade for animals and humans alike.
