ATHERINIDAE Silversides
Diminutive, semi-transparent fishes found in huge shoals in shallow water, mainly over sand. Dorsally light opaque sandy colour, their name derives from the broad lateral silvery stripes present along either side of the body. Often taken in fine-mesh gill nets along the shoreline, then dried and used for fertliser.
