SCARIDAE Parrot fishes
Parrot fish have remarkable beak-like mouths with horny fused teeth, which they use to scrape algae from rocks and coral. Graceful swimmers, they can often be observed on inshore shallow reefs and around breakwaters.
Parrotfish Scarus scaber
Brightly coloured, large scales; blunt head with characteristic parrot-like beak. Small eyes set high on forehead. Colouration variegated blues, greens and pinks. Mature males with orange wash and blue markings, often with striking blue borders to fins. On coral reefs, rocky outcrops and harbours, where it grazes on algae, crustaceans and molluscs. 100 cm.
