Freshwater springs emerge at the foot of the Hajar mountains at Dhayah and Rams, sustaining an unusual marshland complex adjacent to mangrove woodland and intertidal mudflats. Rushes (Juncus sp.) flourish in dense stands, as do reeds (Phragmites australis), with the many intervening pools attracting dragonflies and mudskippers (Periophthalmus sp.).
This highly unusual habitat is valued on nature conservation and landscape grounds, and on account of its landscape and nature conservation value has been put forward to the local authorities for protection as a nature reserve.
