Striped Hyaena

Another predator, occurring in Arabia, that has a liking for carrion is the striped hyaena (Hyaena hyaena ). As with the wolf, there have been no confirmed sightings of this carnivore in the Emirates for a number of years. It too can travel vast distances in a short period of time and might appear in an area suddenly. Furthermore, the hyaena is very secretive, solitary and totally nocturnal, so that an animal feeding quietly on a rubbish dump might be overlooked for months. However, since the animal appears to be absent from northern Oman at the present time, the chances of the hyena reoccurring in the United Arab Emirates seem to be slim.
