CLUPEIDAE Herrings and sardines

Elongate, compressed body, underside keeled with scutes along ventral edge. Equal-jawed largish mouth. Scales shed easily and are thin and smooth to touch; lateral line absent. Silver overall, olive to bluish dorsally. Predated on by numerous other fishes including sharks. Taken in inshore gill nets in huge quantities.
