Greening the desert
CLICK FOR SECTION MAP

Agricultural development in the Wadi Reum area has converted former desert into a prairie of fodder grass for many kilometres alongside the Tarif to Medina Zayed road. This road leads on down to the Liwa area, a traditional area of cultivation which originally took advantage of abundant supplies of sweet, but fossil, water. Recharge of the aquifer is only partial and the water table has dropped many tens of metres, with, in some areas, hand-dug wells having long since run dry. Desalinated water is now increasingly being supplied.

Development of Bida Zayed or Medina Zayed, which is the only sizable inland town in Abu Dhabi apart from Al Ain, and the only such town in the Western Region, has taken place only over the last two decades. Continued expansion is planned.
