Other lizards

The largest lizard known in the wadis of this region is the Oman lizard (Lacerta jayakari ). Blue-grey and brown in colour, it can reach a length of 60 cms, two-thirds consisting of the long thin tail. It is active in the middle of the day in the hot months of the year, although it stays in the shade and close to water. It is possible that it hibernates in the winter months, as it is rarely seen during that time.

Smaller in size than the Oman lizard is the blue headed agama (Pseudotrapelus sinaitus ). Frequently found in the wadis of the UAE, it is, in typical agama fashion, less shy than most other reptiles and allows relatively close approach. Only about 18 cms in length it preys mainly on small insects. The male is very noticeable, as its head and upper body turn a bright blue, when it is sexually aroused or angry.
