Fishing
CLICK FOR SECTION MAP

Fishing involves a large percentage of the population on the UAE's east coast. Part of the Arabian Sea, the waters of the Gulf of Oman are immensely productive, with huge catches of sardines and whitebait pulled ashore by fishermen seine-netting to a distance of only a few hundred metres from the beach. The catch is auctioned off fresh, often immediately it is pulled ashore, and then taken away and spread out to dry on a nearbly sabkha or other flat area. The final product is bagged up and used in poultry feed or as fertiliser, with only a minor proportion consumed by the local population.
